Romans 1:29

The book of Romans, written by the apostle Paul, is a letter to the Christian community in Rome. In the first chapter Paul confronts the universal sinfulness of humanity and points to the need for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Verse 29 lists the ungodly attitudes and actions that characterize those who have rejected God.

All unrighteousness: Paul begins by emphasizing a general state of unrighteousness—any action or behavior that opposes God’s standards of righteousness and holiness.

Fornication: This term covers sexual immorality, including any sexual activity outside the marriage covenant between one man and one woman, such as adultery, premarital sex, and other forms of sexual sin.

Wickedness: A disposition toward evil and moral corruption, describing a state of being morally wrong or actively engaging in sinful behavior.

Covetousness: An intense desire for what belongs to others—possessions, relationships, or status—leading to discontent, envy, and other sins.

Maliciousness: A disposition to do harm or cause injury, including the intent to hurt others physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

Envy: A feeling of discontent or resentment toward another’s possessions, qualities, or achievements, which can breed bitterness, strife, and a desire to undermine or harm the other.

Murder: The intentional taking of another person’s life, a direct violation of the command “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Jesus also taught that harboring anger and hatred can be considered a form of murder (Matt. 5:21‑22).

Debate (or strife): Engaging in quarrels, disputes, or arguments characterized by a contentious and combative spirit, highlighting an attitude of divisiveness and a lack of love and humility.

Deceit: Intentionally misleading or tricking others through lies, falsehoods, or manipulation, reflecting a lack of integrity and disregard for truth.

Malignity (or malignancy): A malicious or evil intent toward others, a desire to cause suffering accompanied by cruelty or spite.

Whisperers: Those who spread gossip or malicious rumors, undermining relationships and sowing discord.

In this verse Paul provides a comprehensive catalogue of sinful attitudes and behaviors that reveal the fallen nature of humanity and the urgent need for God’s transformative power in our lives through faith in Christ. As believers we are called to live in stark contrast to these behaviors. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we can pursue righteousness, love others, and seek holiness. Romans 12:2 exhorts us, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
