Romans 1:30

Posted on 18 May at 14:32

“Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,”

Context:In this verse, Paul lists several characteristics or behaviors of people who have turned away from God. Let’s examine each aspect and explore the biblical teachings related to them:

Backbiters:Backbiting refers to speaking negatively about someone behind their back. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the importance of avoiding gossip and slander, promoting instead a culture of love, kindness, and edification. Proverbs 16:28 warns against those who whisper and divide close friends, and Ephesians 4:29 urges believers to use their words to build up others rather than tearing them down.

Haters of God:Those who actively hate or reject God are in opposition to His nature and teachings. The Bible teaches that loving God is the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-38) and that anyone who claims to love God should also love their fellow human beings (1 John 4:20). Hatred toward God reflects a heart that is far from His truth and love.

Despiteful:The term “despiteful” implies an attitude of malice, contempt, or intentional harm towards others. Such behavior goes against the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor as oneself (Matthew 22:39). Christians are called to demonstrate love, forgiveness, and compassion to all, even those who mistreat or oppose them (Luke 6:27-28).

Proud:Pride is an excessive self-centeredness that exalts oneself above others and rejects humility before God. The Bible consistently warns against pride, highlighting the importance of humility and recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God (Proverbs 16:18; James 4:6). Humility allows us to depend on God and acknowledge His authority and grace in our lives.

Boasters:Boasting involves self-promotion and seeking praise and recognition for one’s own accomplishments or abilities. The Bible encourages believers to boast in the Lord, recognizing that everything good in their lives comes from Him (Psalm 34:2; Jeremiah 9:23-24; 1 Corinthians 1:31). Our focus should be on glorifying God rather than seeking our own glory.

Inventors of evil things:This phrase refers to those who devise new ways to perpetrate evil or engage in sinful activities. The Bible condemns evil and encourages believers to pursue righteousness and holiness (Romans 12:9; Ephesians 5:8-11). Christians are called to be transformed by the renewing of their minds, conforming to God’s will and purpose (Romans 12:2).

Disobedient to parents:Honoring and obeying parents is an important biblical principle. The Bible teaches that children should honor their parents, and obedience to parents is a sign of respect and a foundation for healthy relationships and societal order (Ephesians 6:1-3). Disobedience to parents is a violation of God’s commandments and undermines the value of authority and respect.

In Romans 1:30, Paul presents a sobering list of behaviors that characterize those who have turned away from God. The passage serves as a reminder of the brokenness and sinful nature of humanity apart from God’s grace. As believers, we are called to examine our hearts, repent of any sinful attitudes or actions, and strive to align ourselves with the teachings of Scripture, walking in love, humility, obedience, and righteousness.
