Romans 3:10
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.”
Context:The book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul and is considered one of the most important books in the New Testament. In this letter, Paul addresses the theme of salvation and the righteousness of God. In chapter 3, Paul is discussing the universal problem of sin and the need for redemption through faith in Jesus Christ.
“As it is written”: This phrase indicates that Paul is quoting from the Old Testament. In this case, he is referring to several passages that affirm the universal sinfulness of humanity, including Psalm 14:1-3 and Psalm 53:1-3.
“There is none righteous, no, not one”: This verse emphasizes the universal depravity of humanity. It declares that no one is righteous or morally perfect before God. The phrase “no, not one” emphasizes the comprehensive nature of this statement, leaving no room for exceptions.
The nature of sin: This verse reflects the biblical teaching that all human beings, regardless of their external behaviour or social standing, are born with a sinful nature inherited from Adam (Romans 5:12). It means that every person has fallen short of God’s perfect standard and is in need of salvation.
The need for salvation: Since no one is righteous on their own, humanity is incapable of earning salvation through good works or personal righteousness. This verse underscores the need for a Savior, someone who can reconcile humanity to God by offering forgiveness and the gift of righteousness. In the following verses, Paul goes on to explain how this salvation is made possible through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:21-26).
The role of grace: The message of the Gospel is that even though no one is righteous, God offers His grace and mercy to all who believe in Jesus Christ. Salvation is a free gift bestowed by God’s grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is not something that can be earned or achieved by human effort but is received as a result of God’s love and kindness towards us.
Humility and dependence on God: Recognising that “there is none righteous, no, not one” humbles us and helps us understand our need for God’s forgiveness and salvation. It teaches us to depend on God’s grace rather than our own self-righteousness. It also reminds us to treat others with humility, knowing that we are all in need of God’s mercy.
