Listen to this article

“Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all.”

Context:Before we dive into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context of Romans 4. In this chapter, the Apostle Paul is discussing the example of Abraham and how his faith was counted as righteousness before God. Paul emphasizes that salvation is not attained through adherence to the law, but rather through faith in Jesus Christ.

Faith and Grace:The verse begins with the statement, “Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace.” Here, Paul highlights the crucial relationship between faith and grace. Salvation is not obtained by our own works or efforts but is a result of God’s grace received through faith. We cannot earn our salvation through good deeds or religious observances but must rely on God’s unmerited favor.

The Promise:Paul further explains that the purpose of faith and grace is to ensure the certainty of the promise. The promise refers to the promise of salvation and justification before God. This promise is made sure to all the descendants of Abraham. It is not limited to those who adhere to the Mosaic law but extends to all who have the same faith as Abraham.

Faith of Abraham:Paul emphasizes that the promise is not exclusive to those who are under the law but is also extended to those who have the same faith as Abraham. Abraham is referred to as the father of us all because he is the model of faith. His faith in God’s promises was credited to him as righteousness, and his example serves as a foundation for understanding how we, too, can be justified by faith.

Application:Romans 4:16 teaches us several important lessons. First, salvation is a result of God’s grace received through faith, not our own efforts. We cannot earn our way into God’s favor, but we receive it as a gift. Second, the promise of salvation is available to all who have faith, regardless of their background or religious upbringing. Finally, Abraham serves as an example of faith for us. Just as he believed in God’s promises, we too are called to trust in God and have faith in His redemptive work through Jesus Christ.

  • Overall, Romans 4:16 emphasizes the centrality of faith and grace in our salvation and reminds us that our faith in God’s promises is what brings us into a right relationship with Him.
