Romans 4:17

Posted on 18 May at 14:32
Listen to this article

“As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations, before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.”

Context:To better understand the meaning of this verse, it’s important to consider the context of the entire chapter. In Romans 4, the apostle Paul discusses the example of Abraham’s faith and how it was accounted to him for righteousness. Paul emphasises that Abraham believed God’s promises, even though he was physically weak and his wife, Sarah, was barren.

Reference to Abraham:In this verse, Paul refers to Abraham as the one whom God made a father of many nations. This statement is a reference to Genesis 17:5, where God promises Abraham that he would become the father of many nations. Paul highlights Abraham’s unwavering faith in God’s promise, despite the seemingly impossible circumstances.

God’s Ability to Quicken the Dead:The verse also emphasises God’s power to bring life to the dead. It reflects God’s ability to do the impossible and bring forth life where there was none. This is a reference to Abraham and Sarah’s advanced age, where it seemed impossible for them to conceive a child. Paul is highlighting the fact that God can breathe life into any situation, even when it appears hopeless from a human perspective.

Calling Things That Are Not as Though They Were:Another important aspect of this verse is God’s ability to call into existence things that do not yet exist. God has the power to speak a word and bring about what He desires. In the case of Abraham, God spoke of him as the father of many nations even before it happened in the natural realm. This highlights God’s foreknowledge and His ability to declare and bring about His plans.

Application:The verse encourages believers to have faith in God’s promises and His ability to bring about what seems impossible. It reminds us that God’s power is not limited by our circumstances or our human understanding. Just as God made Abraham a father of many nations, He can fulfil His promises in our lives, even when the situation seems bleak or impossible.

  • Overall:Romans 4:17 teaches us about the power of God to bring life, call things into existence, and fulfil His promises. It inspires us to have faith in God’s ability to work in and through us, even when the circumstances seem contrary.
