Romans 15:17

“I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God.”

Context:To understand the verse better, let’s look at the context of Romans 15. In this chapter, the apostle Paul is writing to the Christians in Rome, expressing his desire to visit them and encourage them in their faith. He discusses the importance of unity among believers and the need to accept one another, just as Christ accepted them. In verse 17, Paul refers to his ministry and the reasons he has to glory through Jesus Christ.

Paul’s Ministry:In this verse, Paul states that he has reason to glory or boast through Jesus Christ. This boasting is not a prideful or arrogant boast, but rather a humble acknowledgment of the grace and power of Christ working through him. Paul’s ministry was characterised by his commitment to proclaiming the Gospel and making disciples. He saw his effectiveness and success in ministry as a result of Christ’s work in and through him.

Glorying in Jesus Christ:Paul attributes his ministry accomplishments to Jesus Christ. He recognised that any glory or boasting he had was not about himself but about Christ and the work that Christ accomplished through him. This perspective reflects Paul’s humility and his understanding that everything he did was for the glory of God. As believers, we should also recognise that any success or achievements we have in our Christian walk are ultimately the result of God’s grace and the work of Christ in us.

Things which pertain to God:Paul specifies that his glorying is in “those things which pertain to God.” This refers to the spiritual fruits of his ministry, the transformation of lives, and the advancement of God’s kingdom. Paul found his joy and fulfilment in seeing people come to faith in Christ, growing in their relationship with God, and being conformed to the image of Christ. His ultimate goal was to bring glory to God through his ministry.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of recognising God’s work in and through us. Like Paul, we should approach our service to God with humility, acknowledging that any success or accomplishments are a result of His grace and power. We should also focus on those things that pertain to God, seeking to bring glory to Him in all that we do.
