Romans 15:17
I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God.
Romans 15:17 (KJV)
Context
In Romans 15, Paul writes to believers in Rome, urging unity and mutual acceptance. The word “therefore” in verse 17 connects his statement to his description in verse 16 of his role as a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, offering them as an acceptable sacrifice, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Paul’s glorying is rooted in this God-given ministry.
Meaning
Paul declares that he has reason to glory, or boast, through Jesus Christ in the things that pertain to God. This boasting is not prideful self-promotion but a humble acknowledgment of the grace and power of Christ working through him. Paul’s confidence is not in his own merits or achievements but in what God has done through Christ in his ministry. The phrase “those things which pertain to God” points to the spiritual fruit of his labor: the transformation of lives, the growth of believers, and the advancement of God’s kingdom. All legitimate grounds for boasting in ministry are found in Christ and in God’s work, not in human ability or effort.
Biblical connections
Paul’s attitude echoes the principle he states elsewhere: “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:31). His glorying is a rejoicing in God’s work, not a boast in himself. This perspective keeps the focus on Christ, who is the source and sustainer of every good work in the believer’s life.
Application
This verse calls believers to examine the source of their confidence in service. Like Paul, we should approach our work for God with humility, recognizing that any success or accomplishment is the result of His grace and power. We are to focus on those things that pertain to God, seeking to bring glory to Him in all we do. When we see lives changed and the kingdom advanced, our response should be gratitude and praise to Christ, not self-congratulation.
Paul’s perspective on ministry reveals that any reason for boasting or glorying is in Jesus Christ, recognizing that accomplishments are the result of Christ’s work in and through him.
As believers, we should adopt a similar mindset, acknowledging God’s grace and seeking to bring glory to Him in all areas of our lives.
Reflection
Consider your own service for God. Do you find your joy and confidence in what Christ has done through you, rather than in your own abilities? Let Paul’s example inspire you to glory in Jesus Christ alone, for He is worthy of all praise.
