1 Corinthians 7:23

Context:The book of 1 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to address various issues and challenges faced by the church in Corinth. In Chapter 7, Paul discusses matters related to marriage, singleness, and the importance of remaining faithful to God in different life circumstances.

“Ye are bought with a price”:This phrase refers to the concept of redemption through Jesus Christ. As believers, we are purchased or redeemed by God through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Our salvation is not achieved by our own efforts or worthiness, but by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).

“Be not ye the servants of men”:Paul encourages believers not to become enslaved or controlled by human beings. This statement can be understood in two ways:

• a. Do not be enslaved to the expectations, opinions, or pressures of others: As Christians, our ultimate allegiance should be to God rather than pleasing people. We are called to live according to God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit, even if it goes against the expectations of others. Our identity and purpose should be rooted in Christ, not in seeking the approval of people (Galatians 1:10).
• b. Do not be enslaved to sin or the world: The verse can also be interpreted as a reminder to not be entangled in the sinful patterns and values of the world. As believers, we are called to live a transformed life, no longer conforming to the ways of the world but being renewed in our minds (Romans 12:2). We should not allow ourselves to be enslaved by worldly desires, temptations, or the pursuit of material possessions.

Application:The verse serves as a reminder of our freedom in Christ. We have been set free from the bondage of sin and the expectations of others. Our primary allegiance is to God, and we should seek to live in a way that honors Him. This involves seeking His guidance, obeying His commandments, and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our decisions and actions.
