1 Corinthians 13:9
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
1 Corinthians 13:9 (KJV)
Context
The Apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to address divisions, immorality, and the misuse of spiritual gifts within the church at Corinth. In chapter 13, often called the “Love Chapter,” he emphasizes the supremacy of love and its essential role in the lives of believers. Verse 9 sits within this teaching, where Paul contrasts the temporary, limited nature of spiritual gifts with the eternal quality of love.
Meaning
The phrase “we know in part” acknowledges that human knowledge, even in spiritual matters, is incomplete and imperfect. Believers cannot fully grasp the mysteries of God or His plans. Similarly, “we prophesy in part” highlights that prophecy, as a spiritual gift in the early church, was given in fragments. It offered glimpses of God’s message rather than complete revelation. Because prophecy is partial, the New Testament instructs believers to judge prophetic utterances and hold fast to what is good, as seen in 1 Corinthians 14:29 and 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21. This limitation applies to human knowledge and prophetic speech, not to the Scriptures, which remain the rule and measure of truth.
This verse calls for humility. It reminds believers that they do not possess all knowledge and that they depend on God’s revelation and guidance. The partial nature of knowledge and prophecy is temporary; verse 10 explains that “when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” Verse 12 further illustrates this by comparing our current state to seeing “through a glass, darkly,” which will be replaced by seeing “face to face” and knowing fully.
Application
Seek wisdom and understanding: Limited knowledge should not discourage believers from pursuing wisdom. They should continually grow in their knowledge of God and His Word, while recognizing that their understanding will always be incomplete in this life.
Embrace humility: No matter how knowledgeable or gifted a person may be, understanding remains partial. Humility helps believers approach God’s Word with reverence and openness to learn from Him and from others.
Rely on God’s revelation: Since human knowledge is partial, believers should depend on God’s written Word, through which He reveals His nature, plans, and will. They can trust in God’s wisdom through prayer, study, and the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
Value love: The surrounding verses in 1 Corinthians 13 emphasize that love is eternal and enduring, far more significant than limited knowledge or spiritual gifts. As believers grow in understanding, love should permeate their lives and interactions with others.
Reflection
The partial nature of knowledge and prophecy points forward to a future state of completeness. Until then, believers are called to hold their understanding with humility, test what they hear against Scripture, and let love remain the greatest pursuit.
