2 Corinthians 3:12
Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
2 Corinthians 3:12 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes to the church in Corinth to address challenges they face and to defend his ministry. In the preceding verses, he contrasts the old covenant, given through Moses, with the new covenant established through Christ. The old covenant was glorious but temporary and brought condemnation; the new covenant is more glorious and brings righteousness. The word “therefore” in verse 12 connects this verse to that argument: because believers have this hope of the new covenant, they speak with boldness and openness.
Meaning
“Seeing then that we have such hope” refers to the hope that Paul and his fellow ministers possess—the hope found in Christ and the new covenant. This hope is not vague optimism but firm assurance in the glory and permanence of the new covenant. “Great plainness of speech” translates the Greek word parrhesia, which means boldness, confidence, and frankness. Paul contrasts this openness with the veiled nature of the old covenant, which was characterized by symbols, rituals, and a certain obscurity. The ministry of the Spirit, by contrast, is marked by clarity and transparency.
Application
This verse encourages believers to embrace and proclaim the hope found in Christ with transparency and boldness. As followers of Christ, we are called to share the gospel and communicate God’s Word clearly, without ambiguity or hidden agendas. We should strive to be open, honest, and straightforward in our communication, presenting the truth of the new covenant and the transformative power of the gospel.
Overall message: 2 Corinthians 3:12 reminds us of the confidence and assurance we have in the hope of the new covenant. Through Christ, we have been given a message of redemption, freedom, and grace. As ambassadors of Christ, it is our responsibility to share this message boldly and clearly, avoiding any confusion or distortion.
In summary, this verse emphasizes the open and clear communication of the gospel, contrasting it with the veiled nature of the old covenant. It encourages believers to embrace and share the hope found in Christ with great plainness of speech, conveying the message of the new covenant without ambiguity or hidden agendas.
