2 Corinthians 4:5

Listen to this article

“For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.”

Context:Understanding the background and context of the verse is crucial for interpretation. In the preceding verses, Paul speaks about the light of the Gospel shining in the hearts of believers, revealing the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. He highlights that this treasure of the Gospel is carried by believers, who are themselves earthen vessels. The verse follows this discussion.

This verse is a part of Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, where he addresses various issues and encourages the believers in their faith. In this particular verse, Paul emphasizes the nature and purpose of his ministry.

Preaching Christ:Paul states, “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord.” Here, Paul clarifies that the focus of their preaching is not on themselves, their own abilities, or personal agendas. Instead, the central message of their ministry is Jesus Christ as the Lord. They aim to make Him known, proclaim His teachings, and present Him as the solution to humanity’s spiritual needs.

Servanthood:Paul continues, “and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.” Not only do they proclaim Christ, but Paul and his fellow ministers also serve the Corinthian believers. They act as servants, putting themselves in a position of humility and obedience to Christ. Their service is motivated by their love for Jesus and their desire to support and help the believers grow in their faith.

Implications:This verse carries several important implications for believers today:

  • a. Christ-centered preaching:It reminds us that the focus of preaching and teaching should always be Christ. As Christians, we should strive to share the message of Jesus, His life, His sacrifice, His teachings, and His redemptive work.
  • b. Servant leadership:Paul’s example teaches us the value of servant leadership. We are called to serve others selflessly, imitating Christ’s humility and love. By doing so, we reflect His character and impact the lives of those around us.
  • c. Avoiding self-centeredness:The verse encourages us to avoid personal ambition, self-promotion, and seeking glory for ourselves. Instead, we should direct all attention and honor to Christ, who deserves all the glory.
  • d. Motivated by love for Christ:The service rendered by Paul and his companions was motivated by their love for Jesus. Similarly, our acts of service should flow from our love and devotion to Christ, recognizing that our service is ultimately for His sake.

In summary, 2 Corinthians 4:5 teaches us the importance of preaching Christ rather than ourselves, embracing a mindset of servant leadership, and allowing our love for Jesus to motivate our service to others.
