Listen to this article

“And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago.”

Context:The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. This specific passage is part of a larger section in which Paul is encouraging the Corinthians to contribute to a collection for the impoverished believers in Jerusalem.

Verse Breakdown and Analysis:

“And herein I give my advice”: Paul begins by introducing his advice or counsel to the Corinthians. He is about to provide them with guidance on a particular matter.

“for this is expedient for you”: Paul emphasizes that what he is about to advise is beneficial or advantageous for the Corinthians. He wants to highlight the positive impact it will have on them.

“who have begun before”: Paul acknowledges that the Corinthians had already taken the initiative to begin something. The exact nature of what they started is not explicitly mentioned in this verse.

“not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago”: Here, Paul is commending the Corinthians not only for their initial action but also for their eagerness or enthusiasm to participate a year ago. He is praising their previous commitment and active involvement.

  • In this verse, Paul encourages the Corinthians to follow through on their earlier commitment and enthusiasm to support the collection for the believers in Jerusalem. He stresses the importance of not just starting well but also continuing to actively engage in their efforts.

Fulfilling commitments:It is essential to follow through on the promises and commitments we make. Starting with enthusiasm is good, but it is equally important to persevere and complete what we have initiated.

Faithfulness in giving:The passage refers to financial contributions, but the principle extends beyond money. It reminds us of the value of being faithful and generous in our giving, whether it is through our time, talents, or resources, to support those in need.

Consistency and enthusiasm:Paul commends the Corinthians for their eagerness and forwardness in their initial response. This highlights the importance of maintaining our passion and enthusiasm for serving and helping others over time.
