2 Corinthians 10:17

But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

2 Corinthians 10:17 (KJV)

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to defend his apostolic authority against false teachers who were undermining his message and boasting about their own credentials. In 2 Corinthians 10:1-18, he contrasts his meekness when present with his boldness in letters, and he redefines the basis of true spiritual authority. The immediate context shows that Paul’s opponents measured themselves by themselves and compared themselves among themselves, a practice he calls unwise (2 Corinthians 10:12).

The verse redirects all human boasting away from self and toward the Lord. It teaches that legitimate glorying is not in oneself—not in outward circumstances, natural abilities, wisdom, learning, eloquence, one’s own righteousness, labors, or the approval of others—but in the Lord Jesus Christ as the author and donor of every good gift, both natural and spiritual. Believers are to boast in Christ as their wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30-31).

Paul is quoting Jeremiah 9:24, where the prophet declares that the one who glories should glory in the Lord’s lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness. The same truth appears in 1 Corinthians 1:31, where Paul applies it to the Corinthian church, emphasizing that all boasting is excluded because of what God has done in Christ. This connection shows that the principle is not new with Paul but rooted in the Old Testament.

  • Evaluate your own motivations for boasting or seeking recognition. Are they centered on yourself or on the Lord?

  • How can you practically shift your focus from self-glorification to glorifying the Lord in your actions, words, and attitudes?

  • Explore ways to cultivate humility in your daily life and relationships, recognizing that all good things come from God.

Pride and self-glorification are dangers in every believer’s life. Glorying in the Lord is an expression of humility, for it acknowledges that every success and achievement is a gift from Him. Paul’s example of boasting in his weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon him (2 Corinthians 12:9-10), shows the practical shape of this humility. As you meditate on this verse, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any area where you are tempted to boast in yourself, and let the truth of this verse redirect your confidence and praise to the Lord alone.
