2 Corinthians 11:7

Listen to this article

“Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?”

Historical Context:The Apostle Paul wrote the book of 2 Corinthians to the church in Corinth, addressing various issues and concerns. In this verse, Paul is defending his ministry and responding to criticisms he faced from some false teachers who had infiltrated the Corinthian church.

Paul’s Humility:In this verse, Paul addresses the accusation that he had somehow offended the Corinthians by humbling himself. The false teachers likely accused Paul of being too meek or not asserting his authority enough as an apostle. However, Paul defends his humble approach to ministry, emphasizing that his aim was to exalt the gospel message rather than himself.

Preaching the Gospel:Paul mentions that he had preached the gospel of God freely to the Corinthians. Unlike the false teachers who sought personal gain, Paul did not charge the Corinthians for his ministry or exploit them for his own benefit. He preached the gospel without any hidden agenda, purely out of his love for God and the desire to see the Corinthians come to faith in Christ.

Lesson on Selflessness:This verse highlights the selfless attitude that should characterise those who minister and share the gospel. Paul’s motivation was not to elevate himself but to exalt the gospel and bring glory to God. He was willing to humble himself and sacrifice personal gain for the sake of the Corinthians’ spiritual growth.
