2 Corinthians 13:9

For wee are glad when wee are weake, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, euen your perfection. 2 Corinthians 13:9 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth to address a variety of concerns that had arisen after his earlier visit. In this chapter he urges the believers to examine themselves and their faith, calling them to a higher standard of spiritual maturity. Paul’s statement, “For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong,” reveals a profound perspective on weakness and strength. He takes joy in his own weakness because it provides an opportunity for Christ’s power to be displayed, while he rejoices that the Corinthians are strong in their faith. The latter part of the verse, “and this also we wish, even your perfection,” expresses Paul’s heartfelt desire that the believers attain a state of completeness or fullness in their relationship with Christ. The word “perfection” here does not imply sinless perfection but rather a mature, whole character that reflects Christ.

Application of this passage begins with embracing our weaknesses. When we acknowledge our limitations, we allow God’s strength to be made perfect in us, just as Paul experienced. Our weaknesses can humble us, drive us to depend on God, and become the arena where His power is most evident. Secondly, Paul models a self‑less mindset. He celebrates the growth and strength of others rather than focusing solely on his own achievements. By encouraging and supporting fellow believers, we contribute to the collective spiritual growth of the body of Christ and bring glory to God.

Finally, the call to “perfection” challenges every believer to pursue spiritual maturity. This involves a deeper study of Scripture, a vibrant personal relationship with the Lord, and a willingness to be transformed by the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ. As we grow in wisdom, love, and grace, we become better equipped to navigate life’s challenges and to reflect the character of our Father in heaven.
