Galatians 4:4

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

Galatians 4:4 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote to the churches in Galatia, a region in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), to counter false teaching that Gentile believers must keep the Jewish law to be saved. In Galatians 4:4, he sets the coming of Christ within God’s unfolding plan of redemption.

The phrase “fulness of the time” points to the precise, appointed moment in history when God’s plan for salvation was set in motion. This was not random; it was the fulfillment of Old Testament promises of a coming Messiah, and it highlights God’s sovereign timing and purpose.

“God sent forth his Son” affirms the divine initiative and intentionality behind Jesus’ coming. Jesus’ birth was not an accident but a deliberate act of God to fulfill His redemptive plan.

“Made of a woman” refers to Jesus’ birth through the Virgin Mary, emphasizing His true humanity. He took on human flesh and entered the world as a human being, fully participating in human nature.

“Made under the law” indicates that Jesus was born as a Jew, subject to the Mosaic Law. He willingly placed Himself under its requirements and lived a life of perfect obedience, fulfilling all its demands on behalf of humanity.

The next verse, Galatians 4:5, explains why Christ did this: to redeem those who were under the law. His obedience under the law and His sacrificial death on the cross provide redemption and salvation for all who believe in Him.

  • Galatians 4:4 reminds us of the incredible love and grace of God in sending His Son Jesus Christ into the world for our salvation. It calls us to respond by placing our faith in Jesus and embracing Him as Lord and Saviour.

  • It also encourages us to live in obedience to God’s Word and to follow the example of Jesus in our daily lives, knowing that our salvation rests on what He has done, not on our own efforts to keep the law.

God’s timing is perfect. Just as He sent His Son at the right moment in history, He works in our lives according to His wise and sovereign plan. We can trust Him to fulfill His purposes in us and through us.
