Galatians 5:14
“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
Context:The book of Galatians was written by the apostle Paul to the churches in the region of Galatia. In this letter, Paul addresses the issue of legalism, emphasizing the freedom found in Christ and the supremacy of faith in Him.
Fulfillment of the Law:Paul begins this verse by stating, “For all the law is fulfilled in one word.” Here, he is referring to the Mosaic Law given to the Israelites in the Old Testament, which contained various commandments and regulations. The Law served as a guide for God’s people, highlighting righteousness and pointing toward the need for a Savior.
Love Your Neighbor:Paul then reveals the “one word” that fulfills the entire Law: “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” This commandment is found in Leviticus 19:18 and reflects the second greatest commandment Jesus taught in Matthew 22:39.
The Essence of Love:The call to love one’s neighbor as oneself is not a new concept, but it is presented as the fulfillment of the Law. As followers of Christ, we are called to imitate His sacrificial love and extend it to those around us. When we prioritise love, our actions align with the heart of God and reflect His character.
Love for God and Neighbor:It is worth noting that the command to love your neighbor as yourself is inseparable from the command to love God. Jesus Himself emphasised this connection in Matthew 22:37-40 when He stated that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves.
