Galatians 3:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:31

“For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.”

Context: The Epistle to the Galatians was written by the apostle Paul to the churches in Galatia, addressing the issue of false teachers who were promoting a distorted gospel message. In this particular verse, Paul highlights the contrast between faith and works, emphasizing the futility of relying on the works of the law for justification.

Works of the Law: The phrase “works of the law” refers to the idea of relying on one’s obedience to the commandments and requirements of the Mosaic Law as a means of attaining righteousness or favor with God. Paul argues that relying on works alone leads to a curse rather than salvation.

Under the Curse: Paul states that those who rely on the works of the law are under a curse. This curse is a consequence of failing to perfectly keep all the requirements of the law. In other words, anyone who seeks justification by works alone faces the curse because no one can perfectly obey the law. The curse mentioned here is likely a reference to the curse associated with breaking the law, as mentioned in Deuteronomy 27:26.

Continueth Not in All Things: Paul emphasizes that it is necessary to keep every single commandment of the law, without exception, in order to avoid the curse. However, no human being is capable of perfectly fulfilling all the requirements of the law. Therefore, if anyone relies on works for justification and fails to fulfill every aspect of the law, they are subject to the curse.

The Book of the Law: When Paul refers to the “book of the law,” he is specifically referring to the Mosaic Law, which includes the commandments, regulations, and ordinances given to the Israelites in the Old Testament. The law served as a temporary covenant that revealed humanity’s inability to attain righteousness on their own.

Implications: This verse highlights the fundamental theological principle of salvation by grace through faith rather than by works. Paul emphasizes that no one can earn salvation or justify themselves before God by relying on their own works or obedience to the law. Instead, salvation is a free gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ.

Overall, Galatians 3:10 serves as a reminder that our salvation is not achieved by our own works or efforts, but by placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. It underscores the need for us to rely on God’s grace rather than relying on our own works or attempting to fulfill the requirements of the law to earn our salvation.
