Galatians 3:9

So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Galatians 3:9 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote Galatians to churches in Galatia, addressing a dispute over how Gentiles are made right with God. Certain teachers insisted that Gentile believers must follow Jewish customs, including circumcision, to be justified. Paul counters this by showing that justification has always been by faith, not by works of the law.

Paul draws his conclusion from the example of Abraham. The phrase “they which be of faith” describes those whose defining characteristic is faith, just as it was for Abraham. This is not every person, but only those who share Abraham’s faith and seek justification through Christ, not through the law. Such believers are blessed “with faithful Abraham,” meaning they share in the same promises God made to him.

Abraham is called “faithful” because faith was his leading trait. He believed God’s promises even before the law was given, and God counted that faith as righteousness. By linking believers to Abraham, Paul shows that the blessing is not based on ethnic descent but on faith, making it available to all who believe.

This verse reinforces the central message of Galatians: salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by observing the law. Paul’s argument echoes the earlier account of Abraham, who “believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness” (Genesis 15:6). The blessing promised to Abraham is fulfilled in Christ and extends to both Jews and Gentiles who share his faith.

Believers today can rest in the assurance that their standing before God rests on faith, not on religious performance. Just as Abraham trusted God’s promise, Christians are called to trust in Christ alone for salvation and to live as heirs of the same blessing.

Faith is the key that opens the door to God’s blessing. Are you relying on your own efforts or on the finished work of Christ? Take comfort in knowing that all who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
