Galatians 5:4

Christ is become of no effect vnto you, whosoeuer of you are iustified by the Law: ye are fallen from grace. Galatians 5:4 (KJV)

Context: The letter to the Galatians was written by the Apostle Paul to the churches in the region of Galatia. In this verse Paul addresses the Galatians’ turn away from the gospel of grace and their attempt to obtain justification through observance of the Mosaic Law.

Understanding the Context: The Galatian churches were primarily composed of Gentile believers who had accepted the gospel Paul preached. False teachers known as Judaizers had infiltrated these churches, insisting that Gentile believers must keep the Jewish Law, including circumcision, in order to be justified before God. Recognizing this background helps to see why Paul warns so strongly.

Christ Is Become of No Effect: The phrase “Christ is become of no effect unto you” underscores the serious consequence of seeking justification by the Law. Those who rely on the Law for salvation render Christ’s redemptive work ineffective and meaningless in their lives. In other words, believing that one can earn salvation through personal effort nullifies the need for Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.

Justified by the Law: To be “justified by the law” means to seek declaration of righteousness based on obedience to the commandments, rituals, and regulations given to Israel. The Law cannot save or make anyone righteous before God; its purpose was to reveal human sinfulness and point people to their need for a Savior (cf. Romans 3:20).

Fallen from Grace: The verse concludes, “ye are fallen from grace.” This indicates that those who depend on the Law have abandoned the gracious gift of salvation offered through faith in Christ alone. Falling from grace does not mean a loss of salvation, but rather a departure from the principle that justification comes by grace, not by works.

The Importance of Grace: Throughout Galatians Paul emphasizes the supremacy of God’s grace in salvation. Justification comes by faith in Jesus Christ, not by adherence to the Law. Grace provides forgiveness, reconciliation, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit—a free gift received through faith, not earned by human effort.

Application: Galatians 5:4 reminds believers that salvation is by grace alone, through faith in Christ. It warns against the temptation to rely on personal achievements, religious rituals, or a set of rules for justification. Instead, we are called to humbly receive God’s grace, acknowledge our need for a Savior, and trust in Christ’s finished work on the cross for our salvation.

In conclusion, this verse underscores the necessity of relying on God’s grace rather than the observance of the Law. Our works cannot earn salvation; we must trust in Christ alone for righteousness before God.
