Galatians 5:4

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

Galatians 5:4 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the churches in Galatia, which were made up mostly of Gentile believers. False teachers, often called Judaizers, had entered these churches and insisted that believers must keep the Jewish Law, including circumcision, to be justified before God. Paul writes to correct this departure from the gospel of grace.

The phrase “Christ is become of no effect unto you” means that for anyone who seeks justification by the Law, Christ’s work becomes useless and without benefit. To be “justified by the law” is to try to be declared righteous by obeying the commandments and rituals of the Mosaic Law. The Law cannot save or make anyone righteous; its purpose is to reveal sin and point people to their need for a Savior (Romans 3:20).

The warning “ye are fallen from grace” does not mean losing salvation. It means departing from the principle that justification comes by grace through faith, not by works. Such a person has stepped out of the sphere of grace and relies on the Law instead. This separation is from the sphere of grace, not the loss of a past salvation experience.

In the previous verse, Paul states that those who receive circumcision are debtors to keep the whole Law (Galatians 5:3). Verse 4 draws the conclusion: seeking justification by the Law severs one from Christ. The entire letter emphasizes that justification comes by faith in Jesus Christ, not by adherence to the Law.

This verse reminds believers that salvation is by grace alone, through faith in Christ. It warns against relying on personal achievements, religious rituals, or rule-keeping for justification. Instead, believers are called to humbly receive God’s grace, acknowledge their need for a Savior, and trust in Christ’s finished work on the cross.

Grace is a free gift received through faith, not earned by human effort. Our works cannot earn salvation; we must trust in Christ alone for righteousness before God.
