Ephesians 3:6

That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:

Ephesians 3:6 (KJV)

Paul writes to believers in Ephesus, explaining his role as a minister to the Gentiles. In the preceding verses, he describes the mystery of Christ, once hidden but now revealed by the Spirit to the apostles and prophets. This revelation prepares the way for the specific truth in Ephesians 3:6.

Ephesians 3:6 declares that the Gentiles are fellowheirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ by the gospel. The Greek terms used here—συγκληρονόμα (fellow heirs), σύσσωμα (same body), and συμμέτοχα (partakers together)—each emphasize a shared, equal participation with Jewish believers in the blessings of the gospel. This inclusion is not based on ethnicity or works but is entirely in Christ Jesus and through the gospel.

The phrase “fellow heirs” signifies that both Jews and Gentiles share the same inheritance through faith in Christ. In the Old Testament, Israel was God’s chosen people with special privileges, but through Christ, the dividing wall between Jews and Gentiles has been broken down. Now all believers, regardless of background, have equal access to God’s blessings and promises.

Being “of the same body” underscores the unity and equality of all believers in the Church. The Church is a diverse community united by faith, and every believer has a vital role in the body of Christ.

Through the gospel, Gentile believers become “partakers” of God’s promises, including salvation, forgiveness, eternal life, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They are no longer excluded from the blessings promised to Israel. In Christ, they have full access to the spiritual inheritance that comes through faith.

This verse is part of Paul’s explanation of the mystery of Christ, which was not fully understood in past ages but has now been revealed by the Spirit to the apostles and prophets (Ephesians 3:4-5). The mystery is that Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-sharers of the promise in Christ Jesus. This truth connects to the Old Testament promise that all nations would be blessed through Abraham’s seed (Genesis 12:3), but the specific revelation here is that Gentiles are incorporated into the same body with equal standing and inheritance.

This verse has practical implications for the church today. Believers from all backgrounds are united in Christ, and this unity should be reflected in the life of the church, breaking down barriers of race, culture, and social status. The gospel is the means by which this inclusion is accomplished, emphasizing that it is through faith in Christ, not through the law, that Gentiles become partakers of the promise.

Ephesians 3:6 is a powerful reminder of God’s grace in including all who believe in the family of God, making them fellow heirs with Christ and members of His body. It highlights the inclusive nature of God’s redemptive plan through Jesus Christ, showing that the gospel is for all people.
