Ephesians 4:13
“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ”
Context: The book of Ephesians was written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in the city of Ephesus. In this particular verse, Paul is emphasising the importance of unity and growth within the body of Christ.
Unity of Faith: Paul mentions that the ultimate goal is for all believers to come into the unity of the faith. This unity refers to a shared belief in Jesus Christ and adherence to the teachings of the gospel. It is not simply about uniformity but rather about believers being united in their faith, purpose, and love for Christ.
Knowledge of the Son of God: Paul emphasises that unity is not only about belief but also about the knowledge of Jesus Christ. This knowledge involves a deep understanding and personal relationship with Jesus, gained through studying His Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. As we grow in our knowledge of Christ, we become more like Him.
Unto a Perfect Man: The goal of unity and knowledge is to bring about maturity in the body of Christ. The term “perfect man” here does not mean sinless perfection but refers to spiritual maturity and completeness. It speaks of believers reaching a state of spiritual growth and character that reflects Christ’s likeness more and more.
Measure of the Stature of the Fullness of Christ: Paul expresses that the ultimate goal of our growth is to reach the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. This means attaining a level of spiritual maturity and completeness that aligns with the character and nature of Christ Himself. It implies growing in holiness, love, humility, and all the virtues exemplified by Jesus.
Application: As believers, this verse encourages us to strive for unity, both in faith and in our knowledge of Jesus Christ. We should pursue spiritual growth, seeking to become more like Christ in character and conduct. This involves studying and meditating on God’s Word, cultivating a deep and personal relationship with Jesus through prayer, and actively participating in the community of believers. Ultimately, our growth and unity should reflect the fullness of Christ.
- Remember, Ephesians 4:13 highlights the importance of unity, knowledge of Christ, and spiritual growth within the body of believers. By pursuing these, we can collectively grow in our faith and reflect the character of Christ to the world.
