Ephesians 4:8

Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Ephesians 4:8 (KJV)

In Ephesians 4:7, Paul explains that each believer has received grace “according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” The verse that follows, Ephesians 4:8, grounds that gift in the victory of Christ. Paul quotes Psalm 68:18, where David pictures God ascending in triumph and distributing gifts. This psalm celebrates God’s power and His dwelling among His people, and Paul applies it to Christ’s ascension after His resurrection.

The phrase “he led captivity captive” uses the image of a conquering king leading defeated enemies in a victory procession. Christ’s ascension is presented as the moment of His triumph over sin, death, and Satan. He has broken the powers that held humanity captive and has secured freedom for His people. The “gifts” He gives are the spiritual gifts bestowed on believers by the Holy Spirit. These are not for personal glory but for equipping and empowering the church to serve and build itself up in love.

The following verses, Ephesians 4:9-10, clarify that the One who ascended is the same One who first descended into the lower parts of the earth, and who then ascended “far above all heavens” to fill all things. This emphasizes both Christ’s humility and His exaltation. The gifts listed in Ephesians 4:11—apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers—are given for the equipping of the saints and the building up of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). Thus, the ascension is not only a past event; it is the foundation for the church’s present unity and ministry.

Ephesians 4:8 calls believers to recognize the victory Christ has accomplished and the gifts He has given. Each follower of Christ has received unique abilities to serve others and advance God’s kingdom. These gifts are to be used in love, humility, and service, contributing to the unity and growth of the church. As we exercise our gifts, we participate in the ongoing work of Christ, who fills all things and builds His people together for His glory.

Christ’s triumph over every enemy means that no power can hold His people captive. The same Lord who ascended in victory now gives gifts to His church, not for our honor but for the common good. Let us receive what He has given with gratitude and use it faithfully for the edification of the body and the glory of God.
