Ephesians 4:10

Listen to this article

“He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.”

Context:To understand this verse better, let’s look at the surrounding verses and the overall context of Ephesians 4. In this chapter, the Apostle Paul is exhorting the Ephesian believers to live in unity and maturity as members of the body of Christ. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining unity through humility, love, and the proper use of spiritual gifts.

“He that descended”:This phrase refers to Jesus Christ. It highlights His incarnation, His coming down from heaven to earth. It points to His humble act of taking on human form, becoming the God-man.

“Is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens”:This phrase speaks of Jesus’ ascension into heaven after His resurrection. It signifies His return to the heavenly realms, where He now sits at the right hand of God the Father (Ephesians 1:20). Jesus’ ascension demonstrated His victory over sin, death, and the powers of darkness.

“That he might fill all things”:Jesus’ purpose in descending and ascending was to fill all things. This refers to His role as the sovereign Lord over all creation. Jesus is not limited by time or space but has authority and control over every aspect of the universe. His desire is to fill all things with His presence, power, and influence.

Implications and Application:

  • Jesus’ descent and ascent display His divine nature and His redemptive work. He humbled Himself by taking on human form, fulfilling the Father’s plan of salvation.
  • Jesus’ ascension demonstrates His exaltation and victory. He is now seated at the right hand of God, interceding for believers and ruling over all things.
  • Jesus’ filling of all things signifies His presence and authority in every aspect of creation. He desires to be acknowledged as Lord over our lives, families, communities, and the entire universe.
  • This verse reminds us of the grandeur and sovereignty of Jesus Christ. It encourages us to submit to His lordship and trust in His ability to fulfil His purposes in our lives.
