Ephesians 5:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.”

Context:This verse is a part of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church, where he addresses various aspects of Christian living and exhorts believers to walk in love and light. In this particular verse, Paul encourages the Ephesian Christians to examine and discern what is pleasing and acceptable to the Lord.

Here are a few key points to consider in understanding Ephesians 5:10:

Context:To fully grasp the meaning of a verse, it’s important to consider its surrounding verses and the broader context of the passage. In the preceding verses (Ephesians 5:8-9), Paul discusses the transformation that takes place when believers, who were once in darkness, come to Christ. They are called to live as children of light, producing the fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth.

Proving:The word “proving” in this verse comes from the Greek word “dokimazo,” which means to examine, test, or prove. It implies the idea of discerning or determining what is pleasing to the Lord. As followers of Christ, we are called to actively evaluate and discern the choices we make, the attitudes we adopt, and the actions we take, ensuring they align with God’s standards and bring Him glory.

Acceptable unto the Lord:The phrase “acceptable unto the Lord” emphasizes that our ultimate goal should be to live in a way that is pleasing to God. Our conduct, character, and choices should be in alignment with His will as revealed in His Word. We are to seek His approval rather than the approval of the world.

Application:Ephesians 5:10 challenges us to actively examine and test everything in our lives against the standards of God’s Word. It calls us to engage in self-reflection and self-examination, seeking to align our thoughts, words, and deeds with God’s truth. This process involves regular study and meditation on Scripture, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide and transform us, and seeking wisdom and understanding through prayer.

  • In conclusion:Ephesians 5:10 urges believers to evaluate and discern what is pleasing and acceptable to the Lord. It encourages us to actively test our thoughts, actions, and choices against the standards of God’s Word, seeking to live in a manner that brings glory to Him. By doing so, we can grow in our relationship with God and reflect His light to the world around us.
