Ephesians 5:11

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”

Context:The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In this particular passage, Paul is instructing the believers on how to live as children of light in a world that is filled with darkness.

Fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness:The term “unfruitful works of darkness” refers to sinful actions and lifestyles that are contrary to God’s will and character. As believers, we are called to live holy and righteous lives, which means avoiding participation in and support of sinful activities. This verse highlights the importance of being discerning about the things we engage in and avoiding any association with darkness.

Reprove the works of darkness:The second part of the verse instructs believers to “reprove” the works of darkness. To reprove means to expose, rebuke, or bring to light the sin and darkness around us. As followers of Christ, we have a responsibility to stand for truth and righteousness and speak out against sin. This does not mean condemning individuals but rather exposing the evil and calling people to repentance and salvation.

Application:Here are some key principles we can draw from this verse:

  • Holiness and separation:Believers are called to live separate from the sinful practices and lifestyles of the world. We are to be distinct and set apart, reflecting the character of Christ.
  • Discernment:We need to exercise discernment in the choices we make and the company we keep. We should avoid situations that compromise our faith and lead us away from God’s truth.
  • Boldness and love:Reproving the works of darkness requires both boldness and love. We should courageously speak out against sin while extending grace and compassion to those caught in its grip. Our goal should be to point people to the redemptive power of Christ.
  • Being a light:As children of light, our lives should serve as a contrast to the darkness around us. By living out our faith and speaking against evil, we can bring hope and truth to a world in desperate need.

In summary, Ephesians 5:11 reminds us to be discerning in our choices and associations, to avoid fellowship with the works of darkness, and to courageously reprove them. May we strive to live as children of light, being a positive influence and pointing others to Christ’s saving grace.
