Context

Ephesians 5:12 sits within a passage where the apostle Paul urges believers to walk in love and light as children of God (Ephesians 5:1-21). In the preceding verses, he lists immoral behaviours such as sexual immorality, impurity, greed, obscene talk, and idolatry, and he contrasts these works of darkness with the life of light that believers are called to live.

Paul’s words in verse 12 are a direct reason for walking as children of light: these secret deeds are so shameful that even speaking about them is inappropriate for believers. He deliberately does not spell out the sins in detail, indicating that they should be reproved more by deeds than by words.

The phrase “it is a shame even to speak” underscores the depth of the disgrace attached to these hidden practices. Paul is not forbidding all discussion of sin; rather, he is warning against casual or explicit conversation about deeds that belong to darkness. Such talk can corrupt the mind and fail to reflect the transformation that faith in Christ brings.

Believers are called to a higher standard of conduct and conversation. Instead of dwelling on shameful actions, they are to focus on what is good and honourable, allowing Christ’s light to expose and dispel darkness in their lives.

Biblical connections

As followers of Christ, believers are to be distinct, set apart from the ungodly behaviours that characterise the world.
