Ephesians 5:20
Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Ephesians 5:20 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote Ephesians to the church in Ephesus, and in this section he instructs believers to live as children of light and to imitate God’s love. The verse follows the command to be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18), and it presents thanksgiving as a defining characteristic of a Spirit-filled life.
Meaning
The verse begins with “Giving thanks always.” The Greek word for “giving thanks” is a present participle, indicating continuous action. This is not a sporadic response to favorable circumstances but a continual attitude of the heart. The call extends to “all things,” meaning every circumstance, including times of adversity and trial. Believers are to give thanks without exception.
The recipients of our gratitude are “God and the Father.” This emphasizes that all good things come from God, who is the ultimate source of blessings and provisions. The objects of thanksgiving include temporal mercies—our being, its preservation, and all the mercies of life—as well as spiritual blessings in Christ: electing, redeeming, sanctifying, adopting, pardoning, and justifying grace; the Gospel, promises, truths, and ministry; and eternal life itself.
Thanksgiving is offered “in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The name of Jesus carries authority and represents our relationship with Him. By giving thanks in His name, we acknowledge that access to the Father and the acceptability of our thanks are through Christ alone. All blessings and thanksgiving flow through Jesus Christ.
Gratitude is an essential aspect of the Christian life; believers are called to give thanks in all circumstances.
Our gratitude should be directed toward God the Father, recognizing His role as the ultimate provider and source of blessings.
Giving thanks in the name of Jesus Christ acknowledges His authority and our relationship with Him as believers.
Application
Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude: Practice giving thanks in all circumstances, even during challenging times. Develop a habit of counting your blessings and expressing gratitude to God regularly.
Recognize God as the Giver: Whenever you experience blessings, acknowledge God as the source. Develop a mindset that attributes all good things in your life to His grace and provision.
Offer Thanks in Jesus’ Name: When you give thanks, remember to do so in the name of Jesus Christ. Recognize His role as your Lord and Savior, and acknowledge that all blessings come through Him.
Remember, Ephesians 5:20 reminds us of the importance of maintaining an attitude of gratitude and acknowledging God’s role as the source of all blessings.
