Listen to this article

“That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.”

Context:To understand this verse better, it’s important to consider its context. In Ephesians 5, the apostle Paul is instructing believers on how to live a life pleasing to God. He emphasizes the importance of imitating Christ and walking in love, unity, and purity.

Sanctification:The verse begins with the phrase, “That he might sanctify.” Sanctification is the process by which believers are set apart and made holy by God. In this context, the “he” refers to Christ, who sanctifies the Church, which is the body of believers.

Cleansing:The verse continues, “and cleanse it.” Here, cleansing refers to the removal of impurities and sins. Christ’s work of redemption and forgiveness allows believers to be cleansed and made pure before God. It is through His sacrifice on the cross that our sins are washed away.

Washing of water by the word:The verse states that the cleansing happens “with the washing of water by the word.” This phrase is often understood as the spiritual cleansing that occurs through the Word of God. The Word of God, which includes the Scriptures, has the power to purify and renew our hearts and minds.

Practical Application:This verse reminds believers of the ongoing process of sanctification and cleansing in their lives. It emphasizes the importance of engaging with the Word of God regularly. By reading, studying, and meditating on the Scriptures, we allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out, making us more like Christ.

Overall, Ephesians 5:26 highlights the role of Christ in sanctifying and cleansing believers through the Word of God. It encourages us to pursue a life of holiness and transformation as we engage with Scripture and allow its truth to shape our lives.
