Ephesians 5:26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
Ephesians 5:26 (KJV)
Context
Paul writes to believers about living a life pleasing to God, and within the household code he compares Christ’s love for the Church to the marriage relationship. Christ gave Himself for the Church as His bride.
Meaning
The verse begins with “That he might sanctify.” Sanctification is the process by which believers are set apart and made holy by God. Here, “he” refers to Christ, who sanctifies the Church, the body of believers. The verse then says “and cleanse it,” referring to the removal of impurities and sins. Christ’s work of redemption and forgiveness allows believers to be cleansed and made pure before God; through His sacrifice on the cross, our sins are washed away.
The cleansing happens “with the washing of water by the word.” This phrase is often understood as the spiritual cleansing that occurs through the Word of God. The Word, which includes the Scriptures, has the power to purify and renew our hearts and minds. The “washing of water” also recalls the laver in the Old Testament tabernacle, a bronze basin used for ceremonial cleansing by priests, pointing to the spiritual cleansing Christ provides.
Biblical connections
The immediate context in Ephesians 5:25-27 shows that Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her, with the goal of presenting her to Himself as a glorious church, without spot or wrinkle, but holy and without blemish. This verse emphasizes that sanctification and cleansing are not self-achieved but are the work of Christ for His people.
Application
This verse reminds believers of the ongoing process of sanctification and cleansing in their lives. It emphasizes the importance of engaging with the Word of God regularly. By reading, studying, and meditating on the Scriptures, we allow the Holy Spirit to transform us from the inside out, making us more like Christ.
Reflection
Ephesians 5:26 highlights the role of Christ in sanctifying and cleansing believers through the Word of God. It encourages us to pursue a life of holiness and transformation as we engage with Scripture and allow its truth to shape our lives.
