Ephesians 6:1

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.”

Historical and Contextual Background:Ephesians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Ephesus. In this particular section, Paul addresses various relationships within the Christian household, including the relationship between children and parents.

Understanding the Verse:

  • “Children, obey your parents”:This verse emphasizes the responsibility of children to obey their parents. The term “children” refers to young individuals who are still under the care and authority of their parents.
  • “In the Lord”:Children are to obey their parents in a manner that aligns with the teachings and principles of the Lord Jesus Christ. Obedience should be motivated by a desire to honor God.
  • “For this is right”:The obedience of children to their parents is presented as a moral obligation. It is considered the right thing to do based on God’s design for the family structure.

Key Lessons:

  • Obedience:Children are called to obey their parents. Obedience is an essential virtue within the family unit, reflecting the order and authority established by God.
  • Respect and Honor:By obeying their parents, children demonstrate respect and honor for their authority. This attitude of honor should extend to the Lord, as obedience to parents aligns with God’s will.
  • In the Lord:Children are to obey their parents in a way that reflects their commitment to Christ. This means that their obedience should be grounded in love, humility, and a desire to follow God’s commandments.

Application:

  • Children:If you are a child or a young person, take this verse as an opportunity to reflect on your obedience towards your parents. Seek to honor and respect them by listening to their guidance and following their instructions, knowing that it pleases the Lord.
  • Parents:This verse also speaks to parents, reminding them of their responsibility to guide and nurture their children in a manner consistent with God’s Word. Parents should model obedience to God and provide a loving and nurturing environment for their children.
  • Additional Scriptures:
  • Exodus 20:12:“Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”
  • Proverbs 6:20:“My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother.”
  • Colossians 3:20:“Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”

Remember, studying the Bible is an ongoing process, and it is beneficial to delve deeper into the context, read related passages, and seek guidance from trusted spiritual mentors or leaders to gain a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word.
