Ephesians 6:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:30

“Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ”

Context:The Book of Ephesians, written by the apostle Paul, is a letter addressed to the believers in Ephesus. In this particular section, Paul provides instructions on various relationships within the Christian community, including instructions for slaves and masters. While the concept of slavery is not endorsed by the Bible, the apostles taught Christians to live godly lives even in difficult circumstances, such as being slaves.

The verse emphasizes the importance of obedience and respect in the relationship between slaves (servants) and their masters. Although the Bible does not endorse the institution of slavery, it recognises that some early Christians were slaves. Paul instructs them to be obedient to their masters according to the flesh, meaning their earthly masters.

Fear and Trembling:Paul encourages slaves to serve their masters with "fear and trembling." This does not imply a servile fear, but rather a respectful and reverent attitude towards their masters. This attitude reflects a recognition that their ultimate service is to Christ, and by serving their masters faithfully, they are ultimately serving Christ.

Singleness of Heart:The phrase "in singleness of your heart" highlights the importance of having a sincere and wholehearted devotion to Christ. Slaves are instructed to serve their masters with integrity, sincerity, and genuine commitment, recognising that they are ultimately serving Christ in their obedience.

The Principle of Obedience:While the specific context of this verse is the relationship between slaves and masters, the underlying principle of obedience can be applied to various areas of life. It reminds believers to exhibit a spirit of obedience and respect in their relationships, whether in the workplace, family, or community.

  • Workplace Ethics:

This verse encourages Christians to be diligent and respectful in their work, even if they find themselves in challenging or less than ideal circumstances. It emphasises the importance of maintaining integrity, obeying authority, and serving with sincerity.

b) Serving Christ:

The ultimate focus for believers is to serve Christ in all aspects of life. Whether as an employee, student, or in any other role, Christians are called to approach their responsibilities with a sincere heart, recognising that their service is ultimately unto the Lord.

c) Submission and Respect:

While this verse specifically addresses the relationship between slaves and masters, the principles of submission and respect can be applied to other relationships. Christians are encouraged to honour and respect those in authority, treating them with dignity and recognising their God-given roles.

Conclusion:Ephesians 6:5 teaches us about the importance of obedience, respect, and integrity in our relationships and responsibilities. Although the specific context deals with slaves and masters, the underlying principles can be applied to various aspects of life. As believers, we are called to serve others with sincerity and reverence, recognising that our ultimate service is to Christ.
