Ephesians 6:17

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:17 (KJV) says:

When we put on the helmet of salvation, we guard our minds against doubts, fears, and discouragement. It reminds us of our identity as children of God and secures our thoughts in the truth of God’s promises.

The Sword of the Spirit:The sword was an offensive weapon used by the Roman soldier. In this context, the sword of the Spirit refers to the Word of God. The Bible is described as the sword of the Spirit because it is a powerful and effective tool for spiritual warfare. Just as a soldier wields his sword to defeat his enemies, believers are called to use the Word of God to overcome the attacks and temptations of the enemy.

The sword of the Spirit is significant for several reasons:

• a) Offensive Weapon: The Word of God is not just a defensive tool, but also an offensive weapon. It allows believers to actively engage in spiritual battles by proclaiming and declaring the truth of God’s Word.
• b) Authority and Power: When we use the Word of God, we are relying on the authority and power of God. It carries the weight and effectiveness of God’s divine truth, which can break strongholds, bring conviction, and lead to transformation.
• c) Jesus’ Example: Jesus Himself demonstrated the effective use of the Word of God when He was tempted by the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). Each time Jesus was tempted, He responded with a relevant scripture, effectively defeating the enemy.
• d) Guided by the Holy Spirit: The sword of the Spirit is wielded through the empowerment and guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is not merely a matter of quoting verses, but of allowing the Spirit to lead and illuminate the Word to us as we engage in spiritual battles.

In conclusion, Ephesians 6:17 encourages believers to equip themselves with the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. Through the assurance of our salvation and the power of God’s Word, we can effectively stand against the schemes of the enemy and live victoriously in Christ.
