Ephesians 6:18

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote Ephesians to the church in Ephesus, and in this passage he concludes his teaching on spiritual warfare and the armor of God. Prayer is not a separate piece of armor but the activity that animates the whole armor, enabling the believer to stand against the enemy.

The verse begins with the instruction to “pray always.” The Greek phrase means at all times and seasons, not only in crisis. Prayer is communication with God, where believers express thoughts, needs, desires, and praise, aligning themselves with His will.

Paul urges “all prayer and supplication,” encompassing every form of prayer: thanksgiving, confession, intercession, and petition. This includes mental and vocal prayer, public and private prayer, and every branch of it—deprecation of evils, petitions for good, and gratitude for mercies.

“In the Spirit” describes prayer guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit. True prayer is not mechanical but a spiritual encounter, where the Spirit enables sincerity, passion, and alignment with God’s will.

“Watching thereunto with all perseverance” calls for alertness and vigilance, staying aware of spiritual dangers and the enemy’s schemes. Perseverance means persistence and steadfastness, not giving up in prayer.

Finally, “supplication for all saints” directs prayer outward for all believers, not only oneself. This communal emphasis fosters unity, love, and support within the body of Christ, and includes praying for those who proclaim the gospel, as Paul requests in the following verses.

Believers are to pray constantly, in every season, relying on the Spirit’s power. This means weaving prayer into daily life, staying alert to spiritual needs, and interceding for fellow Christians, especially those who share the gospel.

Prayer is the vital breath of the Christian life, connecting the believer to God and to the whole family of faith. As we stand equipped with God’s armor, prayer is the activity that makes that armor effective.
