Philippians 1:20

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on

Verse: “According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.” (Philippians 1:20, KJV)

Context:The letter to the Philippians was written by the Apostle Paul while he was in prison, expressing his gratitude to the church in Philippi for their support and encouragement. In this particular verse, Paul shares his perspective on life and death, and his desire for Christ to be magnified through his circumstances.

Key Themes:

  • Earnest Expectation and Hope:Paul expresses his expectation and hope in the Lord. He eagerly anticipates that nothing would bring shame to him as he continues to serve Christ. His hope is grounded in the assurance that God is with him in all circumstances.
  • Boldness in Christ:Paul’s desire is to live boldly for Christ, regardless of his circumstances. He has consistently shown boldness in his ministry, and he desires to continue doing so. His confidence comes from his relationship with Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • Magnifying Christ:The central focus of Paul’s life is to magnify Christ. He longs for Christ to be glorified and exalted, not only through his life but also through his death. Whether Paul lives or dies, his ultimate goal is to bring honor and magnification to Christ.

Questions for Reflection:

How can we cultivate an earnest expectation and hope in our lives, even in challenging circumstances?: 2. What does it mean to live with boldness for Christ? How can we demonstrate boldness in our daily lives?

In what ways can we magnify Christ in our bodies, both in life and in the face of death?: 4. How does Paul’s perspective on life and death challenge our own views and priorities?

What practical steps can we take to keep Christ at the center of our lives and make His magnification our primary goal?: Application:

Cultivate a vibrant prayer life and rely on God’s promises to maintain an earnest expectation and hope in all circumstances.: 2. Seek opportunities to live boldly for Christ, sharing the gospel and standing up for truth and righteousness.

Allow Christ to be magnified through our actions, attitudes, and words. Let His love and grace be evident in our interactions with others.: 4. Remember that our ultimate purpose is to bring glory and honor to Christ, both in life and in the face of death. Live with an eternal perspective, focusing on what truly matters.

Remember to read and study the entire book of Philippians to gain a deeper understanding of Paul’s message and the context in which it was written. May this study encourage you to live with boldness, hope, and a desire to magnify Christ in all aspects of your life.
