Colossians 3:11
“Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.”
Context: The Book of Colossians was written by the Apostle Paul to the believers in Colossae, addressing various issues they were facing. In this particular verse, Paul is emphasizing the unity that believers have in Christ and the equality that exists among them, regardless of their background or social status.
Equality in Christ: In this verse, Paul makes it clear that in the body of Christ, the divisions that exist in the world are irrelevant. He mentions different ethnicities (Greek, Jew), religious practices (circumcision, uncircumcision), cultural distinctions (Barbarian, Scythian), and social statuses (bond, free). However, in Christ, these divisions lose their significance. All believers are equal before God, regardless of their background.
Unity in Christ: Paul emphasizes that Christ is the central focus for all believers. Regardless of their differences, they are united in their faith in Him. The unity of the body of Christ is not based on external factors but on the fact that Christ is present and active in the lives of believers. It is through Christ that believers find their common ground, love, and purpose.
The Removal of Barriers: By stating that Christ is all and in all, Paul emphasizes the removal of barriers and prejudices within the body of believers. The divisions that were common in society-whether cultural, racial, religious, or social-are no longer the basis for separation or discrimination. Christ has broken down these barriers and calls believers to live in unity, love, and mutual respect.
Application:
- Embrace unity: As believers, we are called to embrace the unity that exists in Christ. We should seek to break down barriers and reject prejudices that may hinder our relationships with fellow believers.
- Treat others with equality and respect: We should treat others with equality and respect, irrespective of their background or social status. In the body of Christ, all believers are valuable and have a unique role to play.
- Focus on Christ: Our unity is founded on our shared faith in Christ. We should keep Christ at the center of our lives, allowing His love and grace to guide our interactions with others.
- Emphasize love and acceptance: Just as Christ loves and accepts us unconditionally, we should extend the same love and acceptance to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Our love for one another should transcend any worldly divisions.
In conclusion, Colossians 3:11 teaches us that in Christ, there is no room for division or discrimination. As believers, we are called to embrace unity, treat others with equality and respect, focus on Christ, and emphasize love and acceptance. By living out these principles, we reflect the transformative power of the gospel in our lives and demonstrate the unity that Christ brings to His body, the Church.
