1 Thessalonians 2:7
But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:
1 Thessalonians 2:7 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote this letter to encourage and instruct the new believers in the church at Thessalonica. In the opening chapters, he defends the integrity of his ministry among them, explaining that his motives were pure and that he sought God’s approval rather than human praise (1 Thessalonians 2:4-6). Verse 7 continues that defense by describing the manner of his ministry.
Meaning
Paul says, “But we were gentle among you.” The Greek word translated “gentle” conveys meekness, humility, and moderation—the opposite of harshness or lording over others. Some ancient versions read “little children” instead of “gentle,” expressing harmlessness and a lack of concern for personal honor or wealth. Paul then compares himself to a nurse who cherishes her own children. The Greek term can mean any nurse, but here it suggests a mother who tenderly cares for the children she has borne. This analogy highlights the affectionate, protective quality of Paul’s ministry.
Biblical connections
Paul’s gentleness reflects the fruit of the Spirit described in Galatians 5:22-23. It also stands in contrast to the authority he could have exercised as an apostle of Christ, showing that true spiritual leadership is marked by humility and care rather than domination.
Application
Gentleness in ministry: When sharing the gospel or serving fellow believers, we should avoid harshness, judgment, or an overbearing attitude. Instead, we can approach others with kindness, patience, and compassion.
Nurturing relationships: Like a nurse caring for her children, we are called to love and support one another in the Christian community. We can create an atmosphere where people feel cherished, valued, and protected.
Further exploration: Read the preceding verses (1 Thessalonians 2:1-6) to understand Paul’s ministry more fully. Reflect on other passages that emphasize gentleness and love, such as Galatians 5:22-23, Ephesians 4:2, and Colossians 3:12. Consider practical ways to demonstrate gentleness and care in your relationships and when sharing the gospel.
Reflection
May this study encourage you to grow in gentleness and love as you serve and interact with others, following the example of Paul and, ultimately, of Christ.
