1 Thessalonians 3:5
For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
1 Thessalonians 3:5 (KJV)
Context
This verse sits within a larger passage in Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, where he expresses his deep concern for their spiritual condition. The phrase “For this cause” points back to the previous verses, where Paul describes his longing to see the Thessalonian believers again. His love for them and his concern for their faith drive his actions.
Paul explains that when he “could no longer forbear”—meaning he could not endure the separation from them any longer—he sent Timothy to learn about their faith. This was not a passive hope but a deliberate act of care. Paul had already warned them that they were appointed to suffer tribulation, and now he wanted to know whether they were standing firm under trial.
Meaning
The purpose of Paul’s inquiry is revealed in the latter part of the verse. He expresses concern that “the tempter”—referring to Satan—might have tempted them in some way. Paul understands the reality of spiritual warfare and acknowledges the presence of a spiritual enemy who seeks to undermine and deceive believers. The concern is that affliction or temptation might have shaken their faith.
By mentioning the tempter’s potential influence, Paul highlights the importance of remaining steadfast in faith and not succumbing to the enemy’s schemes. He wants to ensure that the Thessalonian believers have not been led astray. The concluding phrase, “and our labour be in vain,” reveals Paul’s deep investment in their spiritual growth. He had invested significant effort in teaching and nurturing their faith, and it would be disheartening if that work were undone.
Biblical connections
Paul’s proactive care connects with his earlier description of Timothy as God’s fellow worker in the gospel, whom he sent to establish and comfort them in their faith (1 Thessalonians 3:2). The sending of Timothy is a practical expression of love and commitment to the spiritual welfare of the believers, showing that genuine Christian concern takes action to know and support the faith of others.
Application
This verse reminds believers to remain vigilant against the temptations of the enemy and to nurture and guard their faith. It also encourages us to stay connected to fellow believers, caring for their spiritual well-being and remaining watchful against the schemes of the enemy. Just as Paul sent Timothy to assess and strengthen the church, we can take practical steps to support and strengthen one another as we navigate the challenges of the Christian journey.
Reflection
Paul’s example challenges us to consider how we respond when we are concerned about someone’s faith. Do we wait passively, or do we take action to know and support them? His willingness to send Timothy, even at personal cost, models a love that is both watchful and active, trusting God to preserve the work begun in the lives of believers.
