1 Timothy 4:11
These things command and teach.
1 Timothy 4:11 (KJV)
Context
The book of 1 Timothy is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to his protégé Timothy, who was overseeing the church in Ephesus. Paul wrote to provide guidance on church leadership, sound doctrine, and combating false teachings. In the preceding verses of chapter 4, Paul warns Timothy about false teachings and doctrines infiltrating the church, including asceticism and teachings of demons. He advises Timothy to be diligent in his teaching, to nourish himself in the words of faith and good doctrine, and to reject false and godless myths.
Meaning
Paul instructs Timothy to command and teach certain things. The phrase “these things” refers to the instructions Paul has just given, which include commands to refuse profane and fabulous doctrines, to exhort the exercise of true godliness, to teach the profitableness of that godliness, and to declare the promises made unto it. The verse uses two imperatives: “command” and “teach.” The word “command” implies authority and directive action, reflecting the responsibility of leaders to guide and guard the faith. “Teach” emphasizes that Timothy is not only to command but also to instruct, ensuring the truths are understood and applied. This verse serves as a transition, applying the preceding doctrinal and practical instructions to Timothy’s public ministry.
Application
While this verse is specifically directed to Timothy, there are broader principles we can draw from it for our own lives today:
Authority and Teaching: As believers, we are called to respect and submit to the authority of church leaders who are faithfully teaching and upholding sound doctrine. It reminds us of the importance of listening to and learning from those who are appointed to lead and guide us in our spiritual journey.
Sound Doctrine: We should prioritise the study and understanding of God’s Word and seek to grow in our knowledge of sound doctrine. This requires discernment and a willingness to reject false teachings that may be prevalent in our culture or even within the church.
Leadership and Responsibility: If you are in a position of leadership or influence within the church or any other sphere of life, this verse serves as a reminder of the weight of responsibility that comes with it. It encourages leaders to boldly command what is right, according to God’s Word, and diligently teach others to follow and obey.
Remember that the study of a single verse should be done in the larger context of the surrounding verses, chapter, and the entire Bible. This allows for a comprehensive understanding of the message being conveyed.
