1 Timothy 6:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:29

That thou keepe this commandement without spot, vnrebukeable, vntill the appearing of our Lord Iesus Christ. 1 Timothy 6:14 (KJV)

The pastoral letter of 1 Timothy is written by the Apostle Paul to his young protégé Timothy, a leader in the early church. This verse appears in the concluding portion of the letter where Paul gives final instructions and encouragement to Timothy.

“That thou keep this commandment” refers to the teachings and instructions Paul gave Timothy, encompassing the body of Christian doctrine and ethical principles. In particular, Paul charges Timothy to flee from false teachings and to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness, and to pass these truths on faithfully to the saints.

The phrase “without spot, unrebukeable, and good conscience” emphasizes the importance of living a blameless, upright life in obedience to God’s commandments. Timothy was to hold fast to the faith and demonstrate a life above reproach, free from moral blemish, accusation, and marked by an upright conscience.

“Until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ” points to the future second coming when Christ will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. Paul adds that these things are to be a pattern before the saints in the things which are still present, so that Timothy’s conduct would serve as an example for the church.

Key lessons emerge from this instruction.

First, faithful preservation of God’s commandments: Timothy, as a church leader, was exhorted to safeguard and uphold the teachings of the Christian faith without compromise or distortion.

Second, living a blameless life: believers are called to pursue righteousness and to conduct themselves in a manner that honors God, aligning conduct with belief and providing a testimony to others.

Third, eager anticipation of Christ’s return: the reference to the appearing of our Lord reminds believers of the ultimate hope and encourages a focus on eternity, urging diligence in faith until that day.

Overall, 1 Timothy 6:14 urges all believers to remain faithful in commitment to God’s commandments, to live blamelessly, and to keep an eager expectation of the Lord’s return, serving as a lasting pattern for the church throughout history.
