1 Timothy 6:19

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

1 Timothy 6:19 (KJV)

Paul writes these words near the end of his first letter to Timothy, closing a section of instruction about the conduct of believers who have wealth. He urges them to use their resources generously, so that they may “lay up in store” a treasure that is secure and lasting.

The phrase “lay up in store” translates a Greek word that means to accumulate or treasure up something valuable. Here it does not mean hoarding earthly riches; rather, it pictures using what God has given in a godly and generous way, building spiritual treasure that endures.

A “good foundation” is a firm and secure basis for faith and relationship with God. It is formed by embracing the teachings of Jesus and living in obedience to His commandments, creating a spiritual structure that can withstand life’s trials.

“Against the time to come” points to the future age, the eternal realm that awaits believers after death or at Christ’s return. This phrase reminds Christians to consider their eternal destiny and to make choices that align with God’s will, preparing for that coming age.

“To lay hold on eternal life” is the ultimate goal. It means grasping, obtaining, and holding fast to the promise of everlasting life through faith in Jesus Christ. This involves cultivating a personal, deep relationship with the Savior, who is the source of that life.

This verse echoes Jesus’ teaching about storing treasures in heaven, where they are secure, rather than on earth, where they decay or are lost. Earthly wealth is temporary and often passes to others, but the treasure laid up in heaven is kept for oneself to enjoy forever.

Believers are called to prioritize spiritual matters, investing time, talents, and resources in eternal concerns. Generosity toward the poor and good works done now build a treasure in heaven that will be enjoyed for eternity. This transforms one’s perspective, leading to actions that please God both now and in the age to come.

The verse invites each Christian to examine where they are storing their treasure. A life built on the foundation of faith in Christ and marked by obedient, generous living is one that will lay hold of the life that is truly life.
