1 Timothy 6:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:29

Laying vp in store for themselues a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay holde on eternall life. 1 Timothy 6:19 (KJV)

This verse appears in Paul’s first letter to Timothy, where the apostle offers guidance to the young church leader. Paul urges believers to “lay up in store” something valuable and enduring. The phrase emphasizes the act of accumulating spiritual treasure rather than earthly wealth.

A good foundation refers to establishing a solid, secure basis for one’s faith and relationship with God. It involves embracing the teachings of Jesus and living in obedience to His commandments, thereby creating a lasting spiritual structure that can withstand life’s challenges.

The expression “against the time to come” points to the future—particularly the eternal realm that awaits believers after death or the Second Coming of Christ. It reminds Christians to consider their eternal destiny and to make choices that align with God’s will, preparing themselves for that coming age.

“To lay hold on eternal life” underscores the ultimate goal of the Christian life: attaining everlasting life through faith in Jesus Christ. This involves grasping, obtaining, and holding fast to the promise of eternal life by cultivating a personal, deep relationship with the Savior, who is the source of that life.

In summary, 1 Timothy 6:19 calls believers to prioritize spiritual matters, storing up treasures in heaven rather than clinging to earthly possessions. It encourages the building of a strong foundation of faith in preparation for the future and the active seizing of the eternal life God promises.

The verse reminds Christians to be mindful of their priorities, investing time, talents, and resources in eternal concerns. It also stresses the importance of seeking a deep, personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Applying these teachings can transform one’s perspective, leading to actions that align with God’s will and a life that pleases Him both now and in the age to come.
