Posted on 18 May at 11:29

O Timothie, keepe that which is committed to thy trust, auoyding prophane and vaine bablings, and oppositions of science, fasly so called: 1 Timothy 6:20 (KJV)

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane

and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 1 Timothy 6:20 (KJV)

Context: Before diving deep into the context of this passage, it is essential to understand the broader themes of Paul’s letter to Timothy. Paul writes to Timothy to address various doctrinal issues, moral conduct, and the practical outworking of the gospel in everyday life. In this particular verse, Paul is warning against false teachings that could lead believers astray.

Responsibility of Timothy: Paul addresses Timothy directly, urging him to uphold the truth and protect the believers from deceptive doctrines. He emphasizes the need for vigilance in preserving sound doctrine and ensuring that believers are not led into error.

Avoiding profane and vain babblings: Paul warns Timothy to steer clear of empty, meaningless talk that serves no purpose in building up the body of Christ. Such speech can distract believers from the truth and hinder spiritual growth.

Oppositions of science falsely so called: Here Paul cautions Timothy about false knowledge or teachings that are presented as science but are, in fact, contrary to the truth of the Christian faith. The word “science” does not refer to the scientific method or legitimate scientific knowledge we understand today; it refers to a false understanding or interpretation of knowledge that contradicts the teachings of the Gospel.

Application to our lives: Although this verse is specifically directed toward Timothy, there are timeless principles we can extract for our own spiritual growth. We should strive to guard the truth, avoiding empty arguments and testing knowledge against Scripture. Paul emphasizes that Timothy is to maintain and defend the truth, protecting believers from false teachings. This highlights the importance of staying rooted in sound doctrine and ensuring that believers are not led astray.

Avoid empty arguments: The warning against profane and vain babblings reminds us to be cautious of arguments that are meaningless or lack substance. Our focus should remain on truth rather than fruitless disputes.

Test knowledge: By urging Timothy to protect against false teachings, Paul stresses the need for discernment and testing. Believers are called to examine teachings in light of Scripture and reject anything that contradicts God’s Word.

Embracing true wisdom: Paul reminds us that wisdom comes from God. Believers are encouraged to grow in true wisdom that aligns with the teachings of the Gospel, rather than being swayed by deceptive ideas.

In summary, 1 Timothy 6:20 urges Timothy to protect the faithful from false teachings, to avoid meaningless arguments, and to pursue true wisdom rooted in God’s Word. This passage calls all believers to remain vigilant, discerning, and committed to the truth of the gospel.
