2 Timothy 1:10
But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
2 Timothy 1:10 (KJV)
Context
The Apostle Paul wrote this second letter to Timothy while imprisoned in Rome. He addresses Timothy as his beloved disciple and fellow worker in the ministry, encouraging him to remain faithful. In the verses just before this one, Paul speaks of God’s purpose and grace given in Christ Jesus before the world began. This verse declares that what was once hidden has now been revealed.
Meaning
Paul says God’s plan is “now made manifest,” meaning it has been made clear, visible, and evident. This revelation came through the “appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ,” referring to His incarnation—His coming into the world. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus revealed God’s plan of salvation to humanity.
Jesus Christ “abolished death.” This does not mean physical death no longer occurs, but that its power and sting have been defeated. Through His sacrificial death on the cross, He conquered sin and its consequence. For believers, death is no longer the final end but a passage to eternal life with God.
Christ also “brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” The word “immortality” here carries the sense of incorruption—resurrection life that is imperishable and never dies. The gospel is the means by which this eternal life is revealed and made known. Jesus, as the Light of the world, brought the knowledge of God’s redemptive plan to humanity through His teachings, His life, and ultimately His sacrificial death.
Application
Because Christ has abolished death, believers need not fear it. Death has been defeated, and eternal life is secured for those who are in Christ. This verse reminds us of the power and significance of Jesus Christ’s work. As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace the truth of the gospel, share it with others, and live in the light of the life and immortality made available through Him. The gospel is not a human invention but the revelation of God’s eternal purpose, centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Reflection
The hope of resurrection should encourage and strengthen believers in their faith and ministry. The gospel brings life and immortality to light, revealing the reality of eternal life and the hope that sustains us. This truth stands at the very center of the Christian faith, calling us to live with confidence and hope.
