2 Timothy 2:6

The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

2 Timothy 2:6 (KJV)

Paul writes to Timothy to encourage faithful ministry. In the surrounding passage, he uses the examples of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer to illustrate the discipline and endurance required in Christian service. The farmer’s reward is not immediate but comes after patient labor, teaching perseverance.

The husbandman is a farmer or agricultural worker, used here as a metaphor for a laborer in God’s service. The one who labors diligently should be the first to enjoy the benefits of his work. This is a principle of divine fairness: the one who tills the soil and tends the vines must be allowed to enjoy the first portion of the harvest. The teaching underscores a basic fairness—that rewards correspond to diligent work.

This principle applies to ministers of the gospel, who should first partake of the grace of God and the fruits of the Spirit, and also to all believers who labor in the Lord’s work. The ordination statement in the broader context affirms that those entrusted with responsibility are to receive the benefits that flow from their service. The churches, as collective laborers in the kingdom, are positioned to be first partakers of the spiritual fruit that their faithful labor yields.

The certainty of reaping if we do not give up is echoed in Galatians 6:9, which parallels the agricultural metaphor. God is not unjust; He will not forget the work and labor of love His people show, as stated in Hebrews 6:10.

Believers are called to faithful, diligent service with the assurance that God will bring fruit and grant a share in the harvest. Those who serve are to be recognized as primary beneficiaries of the fruit of their work, reinforcing that faithful effort and rightful authority go hand in hand.

Consider the labor God has entrusted to you. He is faithful to reward the work done for His kingdom, and He invites you to partake of the spiritual harvest He produces through your efforts.
