2 Timothy 2:17

And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus;

2 Timothy 2:17 (KJV)

Paul writes 2 Timothy as a pastoral letter to his young coworker Timothy, urging him to endure hardship and remain faithful to Christ. In the immediate context, Paul has just told Timothy to avoid “profane and vain babblings” (2 Timothy 2:16). Verse 17 then gives a concrete warning: such speech is not harmless, but destructive.

The phrase “their word will eat as doth a canker” uses the Greek word gangraina, meaning gangrene or a spreading sore. The metaphor is vivid: false teaching does not stay contained but corrodes and inflames the body, endangering the whole. Paul names two false teachers, Hymenaeus and Philetus, whose words were causing this kind of damage. The following verse clarifies their error: they claimed “that the resurrection is past already” (2 Timothy 2:18), thereby overthrowing the faith of some. Their teaching was not mere speculation; it actively undermined the truth of the gospel and led believers astray.

Paul frequently warns against false doctrine in his letters, urging believers to hold fast to sound teaching. Here, the danger is not just intellectual error but spiritual corruption that spreads through the church. The image of gangrene shows how quickly and destructively false teaching can consume faith and unity if left unchecked.

This verse calls believers to discernment and vigilance. We are to study Scripture diligently so we can recognize truth from error. It also warns us to be alert to teachings that “creep into” churches and communities, undermining faith and unity. By staying rooted in sound doctrine, we guard ourselves and help protect others from destructive influences.

2 Timothy 2:17 reminds us that words carry weight. False teaching is not a minor issue; it can eat away at the faith of individuals and the health of the church. We are called to remain steadfast in the truth of God’s Word, to identify and reject false teachings, and to actively promote sound doctrine in our communities.
