Titus 1:4
“To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.”
Background:The book of Titus is one of the Pastoral Epistles written by the Apostle Paul. It is addressed to Titus, a young minister and a trusted companion of Paul. The purpose of the letter is to instruct Titus on how to establish leadership and promote sound doctrine in the churches on the island of Crete.
Relationship between Paul and Titus:In this verse, Paul refers to Titus as “mine own son.” This phrase indicates a spiritual relationship, suggesting that Paul had a significant role in Titus’ conversion or spiritual development. Paul considered Titus as his spiritual child, sharing a common faith.
Common Faith:Paul highlights the shared faith between himself and Titus. It signifies the unity of belief and trust in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Despite the age or experience gap, the common faith in Christ unites believers as a family, transcending differences and forming a strong bond.

Source of Blessings:Paul identifies God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ as the source of these blessings. It emphasises that the grace, mercy, and peace mentioned earlier flow from the divine nature and character of God. The Father, as the ultimate authority, and Jesus Christ, our Saviour, are the channels through which these blessings are made available to believers.
The Role of Jesus Christ:Paul specifically refers to Jesus Christ as “our Saviour.” This title highlights the central role of Jesus in the Christian faith. He is the One who saves us from our sins, reconciles us to God, and grants eternal life. By acknowledging Jesus as Saviour, Paul reaffirms the essential message of the gospel.
