Titus 1:3

But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

Titus 1:3 (KJV)

Paul wrote this letter to Titus, his co-worker in the faith, to give practical guidance for the churches in Crete. In the opening verses, Paul grounds his ministry in God’s own plan: God has revealed His word through preaching, and that same preaching has been entrusted to Paul by divine command.

The phrase “in due times” means at the proper, appointed time—the time God Himself chose. God’s revelation is not random or accidental; it follows His sovereign timetable. Throughout history, God progressively revealed His will, and this revelation reached its climax in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The ultimate manifestation of God’s word is found in the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and in the message preached by the apostles.

Paul says God manifested His word “through preaching.” The Greek word for preaching here is kerygma, which refers to the public proclamation of the gospel. God has chosen preaching as the means by which His word is made known to the world. It is not merely the communication of information, but the authoritative declaration of the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Paul also emphasizes that this preaching “is committed unto me.” The message of the gospel was entrusted to Paul as an apostle. This was not a self-appointed task; it came “according to the commandment of God our Saviour.” Paul’s authority to preach was derived directly from God, who is described as “our Saviour.” This title highlights God’s saving purpose and the divine origin of the apostolic message.

  • The manifestation of God’s word through preaching is a crucial part of His plan for salvation. We should appreciate the value of preaching and actively engage in listening to and supporting faithful ministers who proclaim God’s word.

  • If called to preach, teach, or share the gospel, we should fulfill that responsibility with diligence, recognizing the authority and purpose behind this task.

  • We should constantly reflect on the message of salvation and live in light of God’s saving work, embracing His grace and sharing it with others.

God has spoken at the right time, in the person of His Son, and through the preaching of the gospel. That same word has been entrusted to His church. As we hear it proclaimed, we are reminded that our salvation rests not on human wisdom but on the commandment of God our Saviour.
