Titus 2:5

Listen to this article

“To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

This verse is part of a larger passage where the apostle Paul is instructing various groups of people within the church. In this particular verse, Paul addresses women and provides guidance on their behaviour and attitudes.

Discreet:The word "discreet" refers to being sensible, self-controlled, and wise in conduct. It suggests that women should exercise discernment in their decisions, words, and actions.

Chaste:This term relates to purity, particularly in the context of sexual morality. It implies that women should maintain sexual purity, both before marriage and within the boundaries of marriage.

Keepers at home:This phrase highlights the importance of women fulfilling their responsibilities within the home. It implies that women should prioritise their household duties and actively care for their families.

Good:This term emphasises the need for women to cultivate virtuous qualities such as kindness, compassion, generosity, and integrity.

Obedient to their own husbands:This phrase reflects the biblical teaching on marriage. It indicates that wives should willingly submit to their husbands’ leadership within the context of a loving and God-honouring relationship.

The ultimate purpose of these instructions is given in the last part of the verse: "that the word of God be not blasphemed." Paul is highlighting that when women exhibit these qualities and behaviours, they bring honour to the teachings of the Gospel. By living in accordance with these principles, they help to prevent the name of God and His message from being discredited or spoken against.

It is important to note that this verse is specifically addressed to the women in the church of that time and should be understood in its cultural and historical context. The principles conveyed in this verse should be applied with wisdom and balance, recognising the broader teachings of Scripture on gender, marriage, and relationships.

Overall, Titus 2:5 encourages women to cultivate a Christ-like character that reflects godliness, purity, wisdom, and a commitment to their families, all for the sake of honouring God and His Word.
